idk bro why would PD get the hardware right but the plugin wrong? i think that eq on the software is whats being driven into the saturator to get the percieved results...

Yes, it's not good to judje saturation, looking to the frequency response, dedicated for linear behaviour. Try to test decapitator, for example, result is very similar, boosting low end.
I've had discussion with one guy, he said that SSL making great products, because it's SSL :) Well, vintage drive sounds close, but still not like a hardware. If we take their EQ module, or stereo expander - imo, you're paying for the air, and of course for the saint SSL logo on your screen. Let's calculate, if you want to collect all Fusion modules in plugin version, price would be almost equal to the piece of hardware. So their nowadays sale prices - this is reasonable price tag for the plugins. However, SSL is a great company, for sure.
And even more - I can not understand, why still mathematical algorithms can not give the same analogue mojo ? Because analog is analog ? Well, we have Kemper, we have ToneX now, this task should be even more complex to replicate, comparing to say, simple subtle tube/transformer saturation. Do we need 100% of true emulation to make great tunes ? Of course no, sometimes that flat plugins saturation sounds even better. But question is still open, where is the bone buried.

The weird linear curve when you increase drive because of it trying to make sense of the nonlinearity in a linear fashion with only a dirac sample impulse to drive it. any plugin that does anything nonlinear and especially low end specific harmonic saturation like input and output transformers will show variations of curves like this
when represented linearly

I think in tests like these you need to run the plug-in out of your converters and back in to match the process of the hardware.

really strange, because in the comparison video, the plugin sounded the exact opposite from the curve we see here... I don't have the plugin , don't have the hardware, what does the phase window show ?

Hi David, I have made the same test with and without the harmonics analysis : i have the same result that you find ( big bump ) but with harmonics analyse when i choose density at 10 : it is completly flat . For density at 3 there s a low curve of 12 dB between 20hz and 50hz . The curve always start to fall around 100 Hz . That' s cool : thank you to make me try this .

The Vintage drive has issues on the hardware and inconsistency between channels also, has been analyzed by a few in other videos. Not sure the obsession with the Fusion to be honest, I think it's a highly overrated piece of gear and don't have it in my mastering chain at all.
