Many who have been following the release strategy of the popular network-attached storage brand, Synology, have been noticing something of a shift towards premium business products this last few years. The brand still features numerous solutions that are targeted toward home, value and prosumer users, but it is undeniable that Synology has been giving a great deal of attention to top-tier business and enterprise above all else in 2022. So far, the new Synology DS1522+ NAS is a solution that on the face of it is something a little bit more SMB and Prosumer, arriving in a 5 Bay desktop chassis and mid-range server CPU form. This new system has striking differences in a few key areas though compared with the DS1520+ predecessor and with little mention of a new DS922+ or DS923+ from the brand in any form, many are wondering if the new DS1522+ is what the shape of the smaller end of the Synology portfolio is going to look like moving forward. Today I want to review the Synology DS1522+ to find out whether this new iteration of the popular Diskstation series is a move for good or for bad, discuss its hardware and what this newer configuration of hardware is able to do. The Synology DS220+ 2-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review 🤍 If you have been considering purchasing a Synology NAS for home or business in 2020, then chances are that you fall into one of two categories. The first category is is is made up of those who are aware of what a NAS can do, as well as how much more you will have to send for a capable and reliable solution. The other party is made up of either first time buyers or those that invested in an entry-level NAS a few years ago and are looking to upgrade. Both of these parties have always been the target market for the Synology standard NAS 2-bay in their flagship plus series. Plex is an awesome way to view your entire digital media library with a beautiful web interface! Best Plex NAS Drie of the Year Top 3 NAS for Plex of the Year 🤍 If you are looking to upgrade your multimedia setup in 2019, chances are that you have already heard of the great multimedia application, Plex Media Server (PMS), that allows you to access all your movies and boxsets anywhere in the world, on almost any device! Plex is supported by everything from Smart TVs and Consoles, through to iOS and Android Phones – this incredibly accessible and intuitive media application provides all your owned media to you, as well as dressing it with titles, descriptions, background studio information, cast lists and recommendations for other shows! It is the perfect multimedia tool for those that want the colourful and information user interface similar to Netflix and Amazon Instant, but want to enjoy their own media, rather than stream/rent media from an online source! If you are looking to build your perfect Plex Media Server, it is highly recommended that you use a Network Attached Storage (NAS) drive. Each NAS drive arrives with a dedicated operating system and user-interface. This UI is accessible via a web browser like Chrome or Firefox, as well as multiple mobile apps and PC clients. Each brand has a very different software build quality/priority and it is recommended you choose a brand that is best suited to your environment for ease of access (e.g Synology is very similar to Mac OSX and QNAP NAS is very similar to Android). Additionally, you will most likely be using the NAS drive for more than Plex, in an effort to make the most of your purchase, as different NAS brands provide differing levels of support for backups, DLNA media, Surveillance, VMs and more. It’s not a big ask, is it! Do you remember when watching movies and boxsets from your sofa was easy? You owned a few hundred DVDs or Blurays, you popped in the disc for what you wanted to watch, then you watched it. It had a few extra steps that Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video and Disney+, BUT you owned what you watched and you were in control of what you wanted to see. The dominance of subscription streaming services was unquestionable and for a while, it genuinely felt like it was the best option for ease of access to a huge library of multimedia that you only really wanted to watch once or twice anyway – all for just $5-10 per service. However, it got complicated. We went from 3-5 media streaming services, to suddenly HUNDREDS, with Films/Boxsets appairing on exclusive platforms (in some cases actual tv seasons being divided across different services too). This also led to TV shows being available/featured on a streaming service considerably shorter, due to the show-owner realising that timed exclusivity and switching streamingly platforms is much more lucrative in the long run. So, the streaming services STOPPED being so convenient, stopped being such good value – with most households now having/needing 3-4 different subscription services (so, in most cases Netflix, Prime Video, Disney+ and the cable TV/Sky provider service) and spending $400-500 a year, and not owning a single piece of media or having control of when things are not available. Add to that the rather bias search abilities of these platforms pushing ‘suggested’ content and you cannot help but pine for those simple days of sitting on the sofa and watching that DVD. It is for this reason that many have made the jump over to Plex Media Server. The Synology DS920+ 4-Bay NAS Drive Hardware Review 🤍 Synology DS920+ 4K PLEX NAS TESTS! - 🤍 Plex Testing Results on NASCompares (Live 22/06/20) - 🤍 When the new Synology Diskstation series was revealed a few weeks ago, I think it was safe to say that it got peoples attention! The previous 18+ series of NAS had been around since September 2017 and many users were starting to get worried about choosing the older generation or holding out for a brand new announcement of something bigger and better to come. During this time, the unit that seemed to get the most mention, was the DS920+, a follow up to the remarkably popular DS918+ (possibly one of the most popular diskstation NAS they have ever put out) and one that provides a fantastic balance of hardware on day 1, upgradability down the line and excellent access to the award-winning Diskstation Manager (DSM) software platform. The full release date of the Synology DS920+ NAS is still to be confirmed in Europe and the US, however, you can still find it listed for sale in some regions of the world. Which brings me to today's review of the Synology DS920+ NAS, which is currently on very limited sale in Japan. Thanks to the wonderful world of the internet, worldwide logistics and most of all, the huge assistance of 'Takeo from Tokyo' - find this hero on Reddit here) I can bring you the hardware review (software review coming soon) of the brand new expandable 4-Bay from Synology and their 2020 series. As mentioned previously, this new NAS is in someway a good jump forward in hardware abilities, and a smaller step in others. There is no denying that it is one of the best NAS drives they have put out for a while, but the main questions to answer in today's review are, is this a better choice of the DS918+ NAS that came before it (and perhaps might be a pinch cheaper now) and if you are a current owner of the DS918+, is the DS920+ enough of an upgrade to warrant trading up? Let's take a look at the hardware and find out. This description contains links to Amazon. These links will take you to some of the products mentioned in today's video. Even if you have already gotten over the hurdle of justifying the buying a network storage device, then you find out that there are LOADS of different kinds out there. If you have been in the market to buy a more user-friendly and fully featured solution, then chances are that Synology is the brand that has garnered the most of your attention. It's understandable, their DSM platform is probably one of the most well developed, whilst still maintaining a streamlined and user-friendly GUI. The latest generation of the Synology desktop range (Diskstations) is the 20+ series and of these latest releases, the one that has seemingly been the most improved over its predecessor is the brand new DS720+NAS. Arriving with a quad-core CPU, DDR4 memory, storage expandability and a newly equipped NVMe caching storage area, this is an exceptionally well equipped two drive NAS. In fact, when we first announced the release of this device when documents were leaked back in April, the DS720+ NAS was the device that seemed to get the most positive feedback. Fast forward to today and we finally have our hands on this new prosumer two-bay NAS for 2020, so let's find out if this new NAS server is exactly what you have been looking for. The appeal of Plex as an alternative to paid subscription streaming services like Netflix and Amazon Prime video is fairly evident, giving you the ability to watch all of your lovely movies and box sets, but still enjoy the slick graphical user interface and background polish (such as trailers, reviews descriptions, thumbnails, watchlists, recommendations and artwork) afforded to those online streaming platforms. The new generation of Synology diskstation NAS' that arrived in summer 2020 (DS920+, DS220+, DS420+ and DS720+) are all solid solutions for use as a Plex media server NAS, however lately many users have identified a recurring playback problem on these recent Intel Celeron powered NAS'. Namely, the fact that they seem to be having difficulty playing H.265 (also known as HEVC) in even rather simple files even as low as 480p and 720p, despite the fact that the CPU and memory are not what being hit very hard. This is a playback issue that is not apparent in the Synology Video Station app (happily playing and converting these files without issue). So, what gives? I am pleased to confirm though that it CAN BE SOLVED! Just follow the guide below, spare 5 minutes to go through the steps and you will be able to play those pesky H.265 / HEVC files, even at 8bit and 10bit. NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 Visit the NASCompares blog for more information on the DS2422+ Plex tests, the test setup and more information on the important factors to consider - 🤍 Thanks again to CCL for providing the DS2422+ NAS for this review. You can visit them and their huge range of NAS solutions here - 🤍 Synology DS2422+ NAS Review – Go Big or Go Home? 🤍 I think it would be safe to say that Synology sells quite a lot of NAS. The brand has always had a strong focus on software and providing ‘solutions’, as opposed to ‘flogging hardware’, but ultimately the outcome is that Synology continues to be the top brand in network-attached storage worldwide. One of the biggest reasons for this of course is Diskstation Manager (DSM, currently in version 7.1), the fully-featured network software that is easily comparable in design, utility and quality to many top tier operating systems. DSM 7 is included with all Synology NAS systems to largely the same degree, but when it comes to hardware, their portfolio has tended to spread itself a little more in order to cater for those looking for value, power, features or scale – giving the end-user an opportunity to spend their budget on the areas of NAS that matter most to their network environment. The 2021/2022 released Synology DS2422+ NAS in today’s review is an interesting example of these lines being blurred by the brand and in doing so, trying to provide a little bit of everything. Arriving as the follow up to the DS2419+, this new massive 12-Bay SMB (small/medium business) solution has tweaked a few things it’s architecture, as well as including some of the opinion dividing changes to DSM 7 that have been rolled out in the last 12 months. The DS2422+ arrives with the now well established Ryzen embedded processor series, the opportunity for lots of memory, huge storage scalability, network upgradability and arrives as a solution that hopes to be the center of your home/business storage for many years (evolving over time). So today I want to review the Synology DS2422+ NAS and help you decide if it deserves your data. Synology RS422+ NAS Review - The Compact Ryzen Rackmount - 🤍 More information on the Synology RS422+ NAS Plex Media Server NAS Tests on the NASCompares blog here - 🤍 If you are considering using Amazon to buy the Synology RS422+ NAS, you can use the link here - 🤍 Using this link will ensure that NASCompares gets a small fee back from Amazon in the form of an amazon affiliate payment. It costs you nothing and we benefit! Synology has really been hitting the enterprise and high-end business market hard of late! With the brand clearly making moves to try and occupy a place in the highest hybrid cloud and service level storage providers, some have been concerned with Synology's continued commitment to the home, prosumer and SMB. Therefore, many users were relieved to see the release of a new 1U prosumer/SMB in the brand's Rackstation series, the Synology RS422+ NAS. This new 4-Bay rackmount server changes familiar staples of this scale of solution from Synology that make comparisons between the RS422+ and the RS419 or RS820+ very difficult, as this system arrives with better base hardware than those two options, but also has a few upgrade and scalability hurdles that make it a pinch less future proof for some users. Indeed, the RS422+ rackstation is a notably different kind of Synology NAS. Let's sink our teeth into this rather compact embedded Ryzen rackmount and see whether it deserves your data. IMPORTANT NOTE!! Sorry for the MASSIVE delay on this one guys. Originally recorded in Summer 2020, this one (a Plex Test of the DS420+) was lost in the archive and SHOULD have gone out in August. It ended up getting overlooked between other projects and only recently recovered! Apologies in advance for the somewhat dated introduction (test # and release of the DS420+). Thank you for watching the videos and I am sorry about my frankly terrible reply speed in the comments - covering these two channels, the blog and working a 9-5 in order to keep the cats in tuna tends to fill up the week! Have a lovely Christmas everyone, stay safe and I will see you all in 2021 - The year MANY of us are hoping moves in the 'Return of the Jedi' phase of society. Synology DS920+, DS220+, DS720+ and DS420+ NAS – 🤍 — JUNE 2020 UPDATE – THE REVIEWS ARE IN! DS920+ NAS Review - 🤍 DS220+ NAS Review - 🤍 DS420+ NAS Review - 🤍 DS720+ NAS Review - 🤍 I am pleased to confirm that the hardware and software reviews on the brand new Synology DS920+, DS220+, DS420+ and DS720+ NAS Drive are in. If you are thinking about choosing one of them for your new/first NAS Drive purchase, why not check out the reviews below: Chances are that even if you have the most tangential interest in the world of storage, servers, NAS and data in general, you will have heard of Synology and their disk station series. Currently considered by many to be the biggest company in the field of network-attached storage, Synology and their Diskstation hardware and software are a company that is not quick to release new hardware – preferring to make the most of their existing hardware portfolio and then releasing software updates and improvement to their award-winning platform with regularity. However, their existing range of Synology 2-Bay and 4Bay NAS just got a massive shake-up for 2020 with the leak of 4 brand new NAS drives for release later this year. Great news for those of us who have been keeping our eyes peeled for news on the newest generation of Synology NAS, with a leak on the data sheets on the 2020 gen NAS – the DS920+, the DS220+, DS720+ and DS420 NAS. These new 2 and 4 Bay range devices are ones that many of us have been keeping a watchful eye out for, as well as the import/export documents that were leaked last week here on NASCompares, and although this is by no means an official or orthodox announcement, they look genuine and seem to indicate the release of the brand new range of Diskstation NAS for summer 2020. et’s take a good look at each NAS and everything we have learnt. Synology RS1221+ Rackmount NAS Review - Is it Innovation or Limitation? 🤍 Rackmount servers have undergone something of a shift in the eyes of the buying public in recent years, with the once heavily enterprise associated hardware architecture of a rack deployed server becoming available in a form that is so close to desktop form, that the lines certainly have become blurry. Smaller 1U units, simply 4 Bay storage chassis and half depth chassis as some of the more common ways in which the heavy metal of a rackmounted NAS has been refined into something a little softer and deployable. Into this new middle ground of more petite racks, we find the new Synology RS1221+ Rackstation NAS. Arriving with internal and external hardware that is comparable to the desktop DS1821+ in a number of key ways, whilst still being designed around a rackmount deployment, the RS1221+ is the follow up to the popular RS1219+. But does this new Ryzen SoC based NAS tick all the boxes? Does it deserve your data? Let’s find out. This description contains links to and Amazon. With the 2017/2018 series of devices now over two years old, despite the constant improvements in DSM, it has seemed like a long old wait. Alongside this, we have seen news and releases into the 2020 series of devices gracing almost every other range (DS620slim, RS820+, DS1620xs to name ut a few), but still no two-bay NAS devices – till now. The Synology DS220j NAS is a device squarely aimed at the budget buyer and for those looking to make a tentative step into the world of a more value-based network storage solution. Whether it’s because they are moving away from the cloud due to subscription costs (DropBox, Google Drive, OneDrive, etc), are looking for something more centralized and secure, or are simply looking for a means to add another layer to their backup solution – the DS220j is presented as a solution to a number of low-level data problems. I use the term ‘low level’ because it would be remiss of me to suggest that the DS220j is a ‘Powerful’ device or something that going to give you the premium Synology experience, no, and I cannot review it as such. The £125 (ex.VAT) DS220j arrives as a more cost-effective and value solution that arrives at 40-50% lower in price than established/powerful devices like the DS218+ (or DS220+ eventually) and this needs to be taken into account. Has Synology mastered the balance of price vs power in this new NAS? Does it deserve your data? Let’s find out. NASCompares Free Advice Area - 🤍 Thanks for watching. Do you still need help? Synology DS1621xs+ NAS Drive Review 🤍 To say that I have looked at a lot of different devices over the years would be a fantastic understatement. Nevertheless, when I finally got my hands on the new Synology DS1621xs+ NAS drive, I have to admit I was excited. For those of you that have followed the Synology NAS brand over the years, along with numerous positive aspects of both their hardware and software series, there has always been one subject of which they have been fantastically abstinent in pursuing at the desktop level - 10Gbe. The subject of desktop profile solutions that are equipped with 10Gbe is something that Synology has resisted for an incredibly long time. That isn't to say that they hey have never pursued 10 gigabit at all, from a series of well equipped upgrade PCIe cards that enable the 10 x Nick connection, to numerous rackmount solutions that arrived with the sport, they do understand it's value. However the Synology DS1621xs+ is the first Intel powered desktop solution with 10Gbe they have ever released, as well as bringing numerous other Synology brand hardware options to the mix. With it slightly intimidating price tag, it is quite the investment on day one. so today, let's take a good look at the Synology DS1621xs+ 10g Nas and decide if it's deserves your data. If you have been looking at moving your mid-to-high sized company data operations away from popular cloud services in the last year or so, then there is a good chance that you have been looking at Synology as your private platform of choice. The same goes for large Virtual Machine operations, multi-site surveillance setups and even Plex Media server users who want phenomenal futureproofing moving forward. The DS36XXxs series has been around for a decade or more and in that time only 4 solutions have ever been included, the DS3611xs, DS3612xs, the DS3617xs and now, the DS3622xs+ – so there is ALOT for this new powerhouse desktop NAS solution to live up to. Factors such as its internal performance, external bandwidth, its scalability and ultimately its justification in price to replace your popular 3rd party subscription services – there is ALOT to take into consideration. So, in today’s review of the, I want to discuss the hardware, the software, where it shines and where it doesn’t, in efforts to help you decide whether the Synology DS3622xs+ NAS deserves your data. Choosing the Best Plex NAS Drive of 2020 🤍 One of the most popular reasons that home users will buy a network-attached storage NAS system for their home is to use it as a Plex media server. Although many people utilise third-party streaming platforms like Netflix and Amazon Prime Video to watch multimedia, these paid subscription services limit the total amount of multimedia you can watch to whatever they choose to support month-on-month. Running a Plex Media Server on a NAS allows you to enjoy all of the media that you own, whilst still enjoying the slick and intuitive graphical user interface that is present on those third-party streaming platforms, such as media thumbnails, trailers, reviews, watchlists and recommendations. The majority of NAS drives support Plex Media Server as an application to install on the device and kick start your brand new Plex NAS home cinema experience. However, the extent to which you will be able to enjoy your multimedia, simultaneous viewers and output quality can differ depending on the NAS drive you choose to use. There are numerous factors that go into selecting the right NAS drive for Plex, ranging from budget and storage size to the proficiency and capabilities of the CPU inside. Below I have detailed the top 3 NAS for Plex to buy right now in 2020/2021. Each one is selected for a different reason, best Budget Plex NAS, best Value Plex NAS and the Most Powerful Plex NAS. All three support 1080p multimedia and 1080p Plex transcoding, but the more you spend the more types of media you can enjoy, with each tier bringing more resolution and quality support (4K etc) to the number of users who can access at once. Take a look below. Best Plex NAS - What Qualifies? Before you go any further, it is worth highlighting how the top 3 Plex NAS were chosen, as at least 70-80% of NAS released in recent years 'support' plex to one degree or another. In order for a NAS drive to qualify, it needs to confirm/adhere to the following: The NAS server needs to have been released before October 31st 2020, so it has been officially available to buy and review The NAS does NOT have to be released in 2020 (so 2019, 2018, etc) are fine, but it has to still be available to buy in 2020 Only Desktop/Tower systems are being considered, Rackmount servers are generally harder to compare and are more tailored to industry Each solution must be a combined Hardware+Software solution Must have at least 2 years manufacturers warranty Must Be able to Transcode 1080p at the very least - 4K Optional depending on the depth Must be at least a 4-Bay NAS, as you need to provision for storage AND redundancy in the event of a failed drive Must feature enough hardware power to be used as BOTH a Plex media server AND other NAS software utilities at once sufficiently Should be usable WITHOUT a Plex Pass Subscription, but having one might be beneficial There you have it, those are the parameters for looking at a NAS drive to buy for Plex. Choosing Between the Synology DS920+ and QNAP TS-464 NAS is more than just about how you are spending your money at checkout! Making the move away from 3rd public cloud storage can be a big, BIG decision for some users. The ‘freemium’ and low cost monthly subscription to the likes of Google Drive and DropBox seems like a drop in the ocean, right up until you realise that over the years you have spent hundreds of pounds and you face the fact that you are going to need to consider moving that data onto something more long term and ‘in house’. For many users, this is their first encounter with two of the bigger brands in the world of NAS, Synology and QNAP and although at a glance they seem t provide the same kind of solution, even a brief second glance reveals that these two brands have very, very different ideas of where you should be spending your money. Synology is the sleek, apple-esc presented solution that promises a smooth and uncomplex experience, with an arguably more rigid and fixed architecture. Whereas QNAP is the more customizable and flexible in its hardware and software, but has a slightly higher learning curve and requires more time to configure perfectly. Both brands provide an excellent range of NAS solutions with each of the solutions in today’s comparison being quite similar in price, but what you are getting for your money, the range of software included, the scope of hardware that is available and how they translate to upgradable and scalability is incredibly different! So, today we are going to compare the Synology DS920+ NAS released in 2020 (but still a firm favourite now) against the newly released QNAP TS-464 NAS. Thanks for watching. Do you still need help? Although paid subscription streaming services can be very attractive and affordable in the short-term, in the long-term you end up paying for content you don’t own, a limited choice of content that changes regularly and even end up having to watch the occasion advert – on a PAID platform?! Many of us own hundreds of boxsets and movies at home in digital form, or in disc form that is waiting to be switched to a more streamable form, that you can simply load onto a NAS and then enjoy the benefits of Plex with. However, although the price of a solid NAS has come down substantially and the ease of setup never being more simple, there are still many common mistakes that people make when buying a NAS for a Plex media server the first time. These errors end up ich either costing more money to resolve or have to be endured until the next upgrade. In order to help you choose the right NAS for plex correctly the first time, I have compiled a list of the most common mistakes that NAS buyers make when choosing a solution. Some are small and some are large, but all of them are easy things to miss as you narrow down the choices. So here are 8 common mistakes made by Plex users when choosing their first NAS. Today I want to review the Synology DS1522+ to find out whether this new iteration of the popular Diskstation series is a move for good or for bad, discuss its hardware and what this newer configuration of hardware is able to do. Let’s find out if the Synology DS1522+ NAS deserves your data. QNAP TS-464 or the Synology DS920+ NAS Drive – Which Should You Buy? 🤍 Choosing Between the Synology DS920+ and QNAP TS-464 NAS is more than just about how you are spending your money at checkout! A Guide to Improving Playback on your Synology NAS Drive 🤍 One of the most popular reasons that many users invest in a compact desktop Synology NAS solution is for use as a private Plex media server.
